Summary
"Two Boxcars. On October 15, 1862, two boxcars carrying 110 "contraband" (slaves freed during the Civil War), arrived in Elgin, Illinois. These refugees of war made Elgin their home. Three Blocks. Many of the ex-slaves built homes in the three block area on Elgin's northeast side. This neighborhood became known as The Settlement and was the heart of Elgin's African American community for more than 100 years. One City. This is a story of race, racism, and race-relations in Elgin."--Container
